Launch Day; Welcome to our Blog

Launch Day. Yippeeeee!

We’re excited to announce that the TrafficButter blog just launched tonight. We're 3 years late. We know. But like they say: Better late than never. Thank you for being patient all the while. For those of you who don't know TrafficButter or what its all about, we'll give you a quick primer on the TrafficButter project.

                                                        

Why TrafficButter? 

TrafficButter was started by our founder in 2011, because he super-duper extra-hated having to cope with traffic everyday to and fro work on the Island in Lagos Nigeria. He also thought driving through traffic everyday (most times not knowing what was responsible for it) is a major pain point in need of a radical solution. He also thought that this problem could be significantly reduced or avoided, and that the most effective way, to do this is by empowering ordinary citizens as reporters. By the way, the name TrafficButter is a converse of TrafficJam. Get it? You're smart if you do.


                                                                         

What’s the problem?

Prior to its inception, there was barely any central medium from which accurate  / real-time information on the current road conditions could be sourced from. Where this information existed, it existed in silos i.e. the minds of the citizens stuck in traffic.

TrafficButter was created to serve as the rallying point for peeps stuck in traffic to share all that useful info. This aggregated info has helped provide answers to questions like:

1.    Which route is best for me right now?

2.    What’s happening on the roads right now?

3.   How long will my commute take?

4.   Does it make sense to take an alternative route

5.   If so, which one is best for me right now.

                                                       

By empowering citizens, TrafficButter creates a precious information stream that will include the information motorists, passengers and pedestrians need to know in real time – from traffic on the major or arterial roads, to an accident scene, to a closed down road, to alternative routes etc. 

We wont try to take the credit for the success of this project. TrafficButter's information stream is all Citizen-generated. Take a look at how it is done:

1. Citizens simply fire up their twitter client on their mobile devices or PC

2. They send a tweet to @TRAFFICBUTTER

3. @TRAFFICBUTTER receives the info, attaches a time-stamp and re-broadcasts this info to its over 53,000 users who in turn share this info with their myriad followers or the people physically around them at any point in time. The reach is very deep. The same info is also shared on the TrafficButter facebook page and via its BBM group. A mobile app across all the major mobile platforms is also in the works. We'll be lauching those, sooner than you expect.

4. They all use this info to plan their journeys and itinerary for the day. From all the feedback we've gathered, TrafficButter's impact has been very significant. 

We want to say a BIG Thank You to every Citizen who has contributed to TrafficButter by their updates, as well as by spreading the word to get more people involved. You are the REAL HEROES. 

We also want to specially invite and welcome all the others out there, who are part of this project, to join us in making TRAFFICBUTTER work even better. 

Together, we will make the world we live in: A BETTER PLACE.
